Why do Germans have surgery abroad?

Cosmetic operations in Turkey, Poland or Thailand often cost 30–60 % less than in Germany. A facelift for EUR 3,000 instead of EUR 10,000 – the temptation is great. And there really are qualified surgeons abroad.

But what happens if complications arise – not immediately, but weeks or months after returning to Germany?

The hidden risks

  • No aftercare on site: The operating surgeon is thousands of kilometres away. Follow-up examinations and prompt procedures in the event of complications are not possible.
  • Language barriers: Misunderstandings during the medical history or preliminary examination increase the risk of complications.
  • Differing standards: Hygiene standards, implant quality and anaesthesia protocols vary widely.
  • Legal enforcement: In the case of treatment errors, enforcing claims for damages abroad is extremely difficult.
  • Follow-up treatment in Germany: German doctors are often reluctant to treat patients who have had surgery abroad.

What does the insurer pay for surgery abroad?

Recommendation

If you decide to have surgery abroad: research the surgeon carefully, look out for international certifications (e.g. ISAPS membership) and take out complication insurance (Folgekostenversicherung) before you travel.

beautyprotect also covers the follow-up costs of operations carried out abroad, provided that the follow-up treatment takes place in Germany.
