Note on independence: This comparison was prepared by Gehling Consulting – independent actuaries – on behalf of quadmed AG, on the basis of the official policy terms and conditions (AVB). The assessment was made exclusively on technical criteria; the methodology and weighting are disclosed. Data as of June 2026.

The point that matters most

A deductible sounds small. Until it costs €4,000.

A deductible means that with every complication you pay part of the cost out of your own pocket before the insurer steps in. With follow-up costs after cosmetic surgery this adds up quickly — treating capsular contracture costs between EUR 4,000 and 10,000.

beautyprotect is the only provider in this comparison that works entirely without a deductible across all plans (LITE, PRO, VIP): covered treatments are paid from the first euro, and private treatment is settled directly with the doctor or clinic through transparent case-based flat rates.

With other providers, limits such as the 3.5× GOÄ rate, a EUR 400 medication cap or a cost estimate that must be approved in advance effectively act as a hidden co-payment. So when you take out a policy, look not only at the monthly premium but at what would actually be left for you to pay.

Why insure at all?

What can go wrong

Every medical procedure carries risks – even when performed correctly by experienced surgeons. Statutory health insurance does not cover the cost of aesthetic surgery.

Infections

Despite sterile operating conditions, bacteria can enter and require costly follow-up treatment.

Capsular contracture

The most common complication with breast implants. Scar tissue hardens and can require repeated procedures.

Bleeding & haematoma

Unexpected post-operative bleeding can require a hospital stay and additional procedures.

Excessive scarring

Keloids and hypertrophic scars can occur and often require lengthy treatment.

Thrombosis

Blood clots are a rare but serious complication requiring considerable treatment.

Implant rejection

The body can react to implants – from discomfort through to complete removal.

lipo-protect Complication insurance specifically for lipoedema & liposuction Special plan Advertising

Preparation

18 tips for your surgery

From the consultation through to aftercare – everything you need to know to be well prepared.

  1. 1

    Meet the surgeon in person

Make sure the doctor advising you is also the one operating. Only then will they know your individual wishes.

  2. 2

    Check qualifications

Ideally your doctor is a “specialist in plastic and aesthetic surgery”. Check the exact title.

  3. 3

    Professional association membership

Membership of DGPRÄC, DGÄPC or comparable associations is an important quality indicator.

  4. 4

    Discuss the risks

Ask explicitly about the general and specific risks of your planned operation.

  5. 5

    Pre-op checklist

No aspirin before surgery, no smoking, no contact lenses. Follow every instruction precisely.

  6. 6

    Budget for the full cost

Also allow for a possible hospital stay and follow-up costs. Complication insurance covers you.

  7. 7

    Book time off early

As this is not an illness in the statutory sense, there is no sick note.

  8. 8

    Pack your hospital bag

Practical clothing with buttons, pyjamas, something to read, your phone. Think about aftercare while packing.

  9. 9

    Find the right hospital

Use krankenhausnavi.barmer.de for independent clinic ratings and quality data.

FAQ

Questions everyone asks

Didn't find your answer? Write to us – we keep expanding the guides.

Has Stiftung Warentest carried out a complication insurance test?
Stiftung Warentest is a respected German consumer organisation that regularly tests insurance products. To date it has not carried out a specific complication insurance test – the market is still too young. This independent comparison was therefore prepared by Gehling Consulting and follows the methodological criteria of Stiftung Warentest.
Do statutory health insurers cover follow-up costs after cosmetic surgery?
No. Because aesthetic operations are not medically necessary, statutory health insurers generally cover no costs in the event of complications. That means infections, capsular contracture, revision surgery – you pay for all of it. Complication insurance closes this gap. → Verbraucherzentrale: learn more
Does the consumer advice centre recommend complication insurance?
The Verbraucherzentrale generally recommends informing yourself thoroughly about the risks before cosmetic surgery and being adequately covered. As there is no statutory protection, private cover is strongly recommended – particularly for operations abroad.
Which cosmetic operations are covered?
beautyprotect covers all common aesthetic procedures: breast augmentation, liposuction, rhinoplasty, facelift, eyelid surgery, labiaplasty, hair transplants and many more. It is also the only provider to cover capsular contracture in full.
What does complication insurance cost per month?
beautyprotect offers plans from € 11.90 per month (LITE plan). lipo-protect starts at € 9.90 per month. Compared with the possible follow-up costs of a complication – which easily run into the thousands – that is inexpensive cover.
