What does cosmetic surgery really cost?

Quoted prices are often only half the truth. What anaesthesia, aftercare, compression garments and above all complications actually cost – and how to protect yourself.

Prices for aesthetic procedures vary considerably – depending on the clinic, surgeon, method and region. Anyone who looks only at the quoted price often overlooks the actual total costs: preliminary examinations, the anaesthesia fee, the overnight clinic stay, aftercare appointments and possible treatment of complications are frequently not included in the base price.

What is often NOT included in the quoted price?

  • Preliminary examinations: Blood count, ECG, ultrasound – EUR 100 to 400
  • Anaesthesia fee: Billed separately by the anaesthetist – EUR 300 to 800
  • Overnight clinic stay: EUR 200 to 500 per night depending on the facility
  • Compression garments / aids: EUR 50 to 300
  • Aftercare appointments: Often included in the price, but not always in full
  • Treatment of complications: Infection, secondary bleeding, capsular contracture (Kapselfibrose) – several thousand euros, rarely assumed by the surgeon

The forgotten cost risk: complications

Grade III or IV capsular contracture, a deep wound infection or an implant replacement can quickly cost EUR 4,000 to 15,000 – costs that neither the statutory health insurer (GKV) nor the surgeon assumes if the aesthetic operation was not medically indicated.
